PLEASE NOTE: The website showcases just some of the animals we have for adoption. We have other animals as well, so please visit the shelter or one of our mobile events. We make every effort to update these pages in a timely manner. However, due to the large amount of animals we receive and adopt everyday, we cannot guarantee specific animals listed will be available when you visit.

Why Spaying and Neutering is Important!

Some people believe that one of the pleasures of ownership is allowing the pet to breed. BUT REMEMBERTHERE ARE NOT ENOUGH HOMES FOR THE PUPPIES AND KITTENS BORN! Even if you find homes for your puppies or kittens, it will take homes away from shelter animals that may have to be euthanized (put to death).

At the Jacksonville Humane Society we receive thousands of unwanted pets a Year! Most are loving animals that deserve a good home. As of 2002, the humane society’s non-euthanized rate was 36% (which includes animals adopted, rescued, returned to owners, return to wildlife).

For every 1 person born 15 puppies and 45 kittens are born!

Nationally there are millions of dogs and cats euthanized a year!

Adoption is not a solution. THERE ARE JUST TOO MANY!

The Importance of Veterinarian Care

To keep your pets healthy they must have veterinarian care. Puppies and kittens are vaccinated at 8, 10, 12, 16, and 20 weeks of age. These vaccinations are EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!

Adult dogs and cats must have ANNUAL BOOSTER VACCINATIONS to protect you and your pet from dangerous diseases such as rabies!

Yearly vaccinations can assure the safety of you and your pet.

Pet Laws

All pets four months and older are required to have a current rabies vaccination and city license. The license can be obtained from your veterinarian or Animal Care and Control. For information please call (904) 387-8846.

If you live at the beach please contact your local animal control office for pet licensing laws.

Property and Leash Laws

All pets are required to be on a leash.

  • Dogs and cats are not allowed to roam, and must remain on your property.
  • When walking your pet, it is your responsibility to clean up after them.

Cruelty and Neglect

Florida Law protects animals against cruelty, abuse and neglect. Violation of these laws may be punishable by fines and/or jail sentences. If you see an animal being abused, please contact us at animalwelfare@jaxhumane.org.
