Veterans who have served in the military face unique challenges as they transition back into civilian life. Navigating the shift from a structured military environment to the civilian world can be difficult. The Jacksonville Humane Society has developed a unique opportunity for active-duty members, Veterans, and their families to give our animal friends a helping hand.
Troops & Tails has two tracks – the Troops & Tails Volunteer Program open to active-duty members and Veterans, and the Troops & Tails Academy, a FREE job skills training program available to Veterans and their families. JHS is proud to serve those who have served our country.
The Healing Power of Animals
For many Veterans, the transition back to civilian life after military service can be marked by stress, anxiety, and depression. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is common among Veterans, and many struggle to find activities or experiences that bring them peace and comfort. Studies have shown that interacting with animals can have a profound effect on mental health, providing stress relief, reducing anxiety, and boosting overall emotional well-being.
Similarly, dogs and cats endure a great deal of stress when they enter the building. To start, being lost and alone or losing a family is tough. Then, pets enter a strange building with so many sights, sounds, and smells! Our team does their very best to comfort them with enrichment and compassionate care – but it is still an overwhelming situation for many.
Who better can understand this situation than our nation’s heroes who made great sacrifices and experienced prolonged stress or trauma? They can empathize and support shelter animals and may have a need for a pet to provide that support for them as well. A little one-on-one time with a dog or cat can make a big difference.
